T127 Debrief Module: Personal Learning Goals

Now that T127: Teaching and Learning Lab Practicum has come to a close, I can revisit the learning goals I posted during the Discover Module in September:

  1. Continue to apply (and refine my understanding of) the design process. I definitely accomplished this one. Running both the user test and the pilot, as well as working on a team with Majo and Lauren, has really convinced me of the power of iterative prototyping as well as how to work on a learning design team.
  2. Advance my technical skills. While I’m not sure how much my experience working with Viewpoint would transfer, I did have to engage in some troubleshooting and creating workarounds for the limitations of the platform. However, I do feel equipped to work on future simulations, regardless of platform, having helped create this simulation. I think having a map of all the necessary components for a simulation in my head is a kind of technical skill too.
  3. Gain more experience with adult learning, especially Higher Ed. Because the subject matter of the simulation was a learning design kick-off meeting and the participants of the simulation were graduate students, I feel I have filled a gap in this area. Reading the expert interviews that Lauren and Majo conducted with TLL team members were also very illuminating.
  4. Increase confidence in the role of an instructional/learning designer. I don’t feel that I could take over an L&D department, but I do think that I could talk about this project and the course content in some detail during a job interview. I could also talk about being part of a team with a project manager and a subject matter expert. I will also feel confident advocating for user testing every step of the way.
